A city of educational and cultural excellence, the city of Jalandhar was visited by Hiuen Tsang, which has definitely intensified the tourism value of the place. From the Mughals to the British rulers everyone has their association with the city of Jalandhar, for which Jalandhar still is serving as the cultural capital of Punjab.
Under the Mughal Emperors, Jalandhar was always the capital of the northern and most important portion of the Jalandhar Doab, which then extended to the neighborhood of Multan. The destructive remains of the Mughal during the medieval era attract tourists on a large scale to the hub of the district.
The remains of the forts of burnt bricks built during the Sikh domination here are imposing to your eyes. Various remains of the Sikh empire as well as culture are still found in the extensive Doab and areas surrounding the river Satlej.
By dethroning the Sikh domination, the British made it the headquarter of the Commissionership of the Trans-Satlej States, afterwards known as the Commissionership of Jalandhar. The British buildings are still standing there with characteristic royal excellence.
However, what makes Jalandhar boasts of its cultural excellence is the presence of a number historic monuments of different cultural backgrounds thrived in the same place. Among the prominent names include the mausoleum of Imam Nasir, the fort at Phillaur which once served as Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s line of defence against the British, a Shiv Mandir which dates back to the Lodhi era, Devi Talab Mandir, Tombs at Nakodar, Sarai at Nurmahal, Gurudwara at Kartarpur etc.
It is better to visit the place during festivals, when a lot of gorgeous and exciting fairs are organized there. Among the leading fairs and festivals, Baisakhi festival, Fair of Baba Sodal and Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan are worth mentioning.
Apart from Gurdwara Chebin Padshahi, impressive gateways like Masoleum of Ustad and Shagrid, Pushpa Hujral Science City, Moorish Mosque, Handira Mausoleum are worth visiting.
