Jalandhar Weather and Climate
The district of Jalandhar is geographically placed at the dry region of Punjab, which determines its climatic conditions. Enclosed within the plain tract of Beas, Ravi and Satlej, Jalandhar, experiences hot and dry summers and wet and humid monsoons. According to the geographical status, Jalandhar is located between 71º 31′ East latitude and 30º 33′ North Latitude, which allows the district to experience distinctly all the four seasons.
As far the climatic conditions of Jalandhar is concerned, the summer season here begins from the middle of March and continues till the month of June. The weather is essentially sunny with cloudless sky. During the summer season, very dry weather accompanied with hot winds, prevails the district. Such gushes of hot winds are commonly referred to as the loo. The relative humidity of the air during the summer is very low in Jalandhar. In fact, inhabitants there need to cover their head with scurf in order to escape the scorching heat, which may otherwise cause a lot of problems, especially skin damages.
The intensity of dry summer months reduces during the end of the June, which marks the arrival of wet monsoon season with ugh humidity. Normally, the monsoon season starts from the end of June and pervades the entire district throughout the entire months of July and August till the middle of September. During this period, the annual average rainfall recorded is 703.0 mm. The relative humidity of air increases during the monsoon season. The characteristic weather condition during this time is overcast skies coupled with heavy spells of rain. The best part of the season is that the rainy season lower the temperature of Jalandhar, which makes provides comfortable relief from the dry summer months.
On an average, the monsoon in Jalandhar comes with 36 long rainy days (i.e. days with rainfall of 2.5 mm or more) in a year in the district. However, the amount of rainfall varies from 30 at Phagwara to 45 at Adampur (Aera-obsy). Statistics reveal that the heaviest rainfall in 24 hours recorded at any station in the district was 304.8 mm at Jalandhar in the year 1978.
The post-monsoon season is very comfortable here due to its soothing weather conditions. Jalandhar experiences post-monsoon season from the middle of September to the middle of November. During this period, the temperature of Jalandhar remains comparatively lower than dry summer months. The winter season in Jalandhar begins from the middle of November and continues till the middle of March. Suring the winters, the entire district often experiences very low temperatures, with cold gushes of north wind. These cold waves are especially responsible for the significantly reduced temperature during the winter months. At winter months, the maximum diurnal temperature dips down to 19ºC but the minimum diurnal temperature prevails around 6 ºC for most part of the winter season.
With hot and dry climatic conditions, the district of Jalandhar features a favorable weather conditions for growing several important agricultural crops like wheat and sugarcane, which has been serving as one of the important part of the economic backbone of the Punjab.
